My Passion

The title of my blog is a tribute to my passion. From the virtual battlefields of Call of Duty, to air soft skirmishes in the dead of night, to firing real sniper rifles at targets, I am fascinated with the arts of subterfuge, camouflage, incredible accuracy with a rifle, and of course the sniper's motto, "one shot, one kill." The title of my blog is a quote from the movie, based on a true story, Enemy at the Gates, the ultimate tale of two World War Two snipers, one Soviet, the other Fascist, engaged in an epic battle over the remains of war torn 1942 Stalingrad.

Alex, the Gateway Drug

Rebekah, sometimes you scare me. Yesterday you told me that I was your gateway drug to guns, war movies, violence, and first-person-shooter video games. Today you call me and discuss sniper positions and tactics at Kings-Dominion. Should I be worried? Probably not. I love how when we first started seriously hanging out, you were anti-gun and I offered to let you hold the AK-47. You were almost too scared to, but your sense of adventure overtook the way you were raised, and later that night, when we went to Wal-Mart, you absorbed, and retained more knowledge than you probably ever had and will again. Since then you have played airsoft, watched some excellent war movies (better than Disney?), killed a virtual Nazi, fired real guns, and best of all, bought a pellet pistol of your own (how did it feel?). I am glad that I helped convert you to the gunner side of life, but even more glad to have someone to discuss topics like urban sniper tactics without being suggested to a psychiatrist.

:D I guess I have come a long way! Thanks for being my drug! I saw a mannequin in a tall window at Kings Dominion. I thought it was a schnipa. It really would have been a bs place to do it though. Just to inform you, yes I do think war movies are better than Disney [blasphemy] and it felt awesome buying my first gun. I greatly enjoy having a new found hobby/paranoia! It is amazing. I think we are both going to be suggested for some psychiatric help though. Let's cross our fingers that the FBI isn't tracing our calls yet.

My Top 5 Favorite Movie Sniper Moments

  • 1. Movie: Saving Private Ryan, The Shot: When the christian sniper puts a 30-06 round through the scope and in the eye of the German sniper
  • 2. Movie: Enemy at the Gates, The Shot: When the German sniper shoots the Russian accompanying Vassili in mid-air as he leaps a gap to relocate.
  • 3. Movie: We Were Soldiers, The Shot: The sniper is not seen, but in the opening scene the contents of a French Officer's skull are splattered on the face of the Private next to him.
  • 4. Movie: Enemy at the Gates, The Shot: Vassili, armed with a stripper clip of 7.62x54r, defeats five Nazis by timing his shots to coincide with explosions in the background.
  • 5. Movie: Jarhead, The Shot: This one isn't even in the movie. In special features there is an alternate scenes section in which the main character makes an incredibly long shot with an M40A3 that he was not allowed to take in the movie, ending in a great "pink mist".
